6.15PM
This evening your driver will be waiting to transfer us to our welcome dinner at Le Plongeoir restaurant, an iconic restaurant in Nice.

At the end of the nineteenth century a stylish fishing boat was secured on the rock. During “La Belle Époque”, guests could eat and drink tea perched six metres above the waves. This restaurant, connected by a walkway to a charming gazebo typical of that era on the French Riviera, soon became emblematic of the city of Nice. Following damage to the fishing vessel, architect René Livieri was commissioned in 1941 to bring a new lease of life to the site, giving rise to the Diving Boards on the seaward side with a beach restaurant replacing the gazebo.

Welcome dinner tonight includes starters to share, main course and dessert of the day. Drinks are à la carte and at your own charge.

Nestled in the heart of Monaco, the Casino de Monte-Carlo epitomises luxury, elegance, and entertainment. Steeped in history and adorned with exquisite architecture, a visit to this iconic establishment offers a unique blend of historical tales, cultural richness, and fascinating anecdotes.

The Casino de Monte-Carlo, inaugurated in 1863, was the brain child of Princess Caroline, the spouse of Prince Florestan I of Monaco. It was built to address the financial troubles of the House of Grimaldi, hoping to draw wealthy patrons from across Europe. The architectural marvel was designed by Charles Garnier, the same architect behind the Paris Opera House.

Over the years, it has hosted countless notable figures, adding to its lore and mystique.

The casino serves as a cultural beacon within the Principality, not only as a gambling hall but also as a hub for arts and music. The Opéra de Monte-Carlo, a part of the casino, showcases world-class performances, making it a cultural cornerstone. The venue’s connection to various films, including James Bond classics, highlights its perpetual allure in popular culture.

Begin your journey in the Atrium, an awe-inspiring hall marked by marble columns and goldleafed decorations. This grand entrance sets the stage for the opulence that awaits within.

Continue your visit to The Salle Europe. Often referred to as the heart of the casino, the Salle Europe is the main gaming room. With its shimmering chandeliers, elaborate frescoes, and intricate woodwork, this room exudes Belle Époque splendor. It’s the perfect place to admire the architecture while trying your luck at various games. Legend has it that Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, inspired by his visit here, wrote the novel “The Gambler” in a mere 26 days to pay off his own gambling debts. Then enter the Salle Médecin, renowned for its thematic design and artistic elements. It often hosts special events and high-stakes gaming, adding another layer of exclusivity.

The Salle Médecin is named after François Blanc's doctor, Eugène Médecin, who played a pivotal role in the early establishment of the casino. This room has witnessed several high-profile games, including Prince Rainier III’s grand 25th wedding anniversary celebration, marking it as an emblem of both prestige and history.

The Salle Blanche, if available, is a tranquil contrast to the more vibrant rooms, featuring serene white decor with gold accents. This room showcases mesmerising views of the Mediterranean Sea, providing a relaxing backdrop for gaming or simply soaking in the ambiance. It is said that the Salle Blanche was where Grace Kelly was first introduced to Prince Rainier III, sparking a legendary romance that would blend Hollywood glamour with Monaco’s royal heritage.

Aside from the gaming rooms, the Casino de Monte-Carlo hosts an array of cultural events throughout the year. From classical concerts and operas to contemporary art exhibitions, there’s always something enriching happening within its gilded walls.

Dinner will be served in Le Salon Rose. Enjoy a 3 course dinner with ½ bottle of wine per person, water, and €20 chips per person to try your luck in the casino after dinner !

Saturday Day 8 – Half Day Walking Food tour of Nice (3 hours)

9.30AM We will meet our guide at a designated spot for our morning walking food tour of Nice. Nice is the only city in France that is famed for its street food, a result of the strong Italian influence here. Many of the snacks sold at the Cours Saleya market and in the Old Town’s street food stands would have been eaten by workers to calm mid-morning hunger pangs: a tradition known as la merenda.

During this fascinating three-hour tour you will learn about the history of Nice and its food and taste such unexpected delicacies as pissaladière (caramelized onion tart), socca (chick pea pancake), fougasse (Provençal flatbread) and tourte de blettes (a sweet pie with a surprise ingredient). And of course, you will have an opportunity to sample also the local wine.
